Poll: Which is a better golfing spectacle?

Portugal - Oeste

By Henry Mount
Friday 19th October 2007

GETTING THERE
The Oeste region is one hour's drive north of Lisbon. TAP Portugal (www.flytap.com 0845 601 0932) flies to Lisbon from Manchester, Heathrow and Gatwick. British Airways (www.ba.com 0870 850 9850) flies from Heathrow and Gatwick.

WHERE TO PLAY
The only thing that stands between Portugal's west coast and the USA is the Atlantic, where on a windy day the wind sweeps off the sea and funnels down the course at Praia D'El Rey. The sand dunes look pretty but they only halt the wind on a few holes, making club selection trickier than a downhill putt on a tiered green.
Away from the coast, Golden Eagle at Quinta do Brinça is an American-style parkland course, which is located on gently rolling farmland. The seven lakes should keep you on your toes.
Campo Real is one of the newest courses in the region. It runs through an old wine valley and the views are spectacular, particularly from the 17th tee.
Bom Sucesso is currently under construction. Stunningly designed houses overlook the course which is expected to open during Spring 2008. Designed by Donald Steel, the fairways enjoy views of a saltwater lagoon, the sea and undulating countryside.

WHERE TO STAY
The Marriott hotel at Praia D'El Rey makes an ideal base, offering five-star comforts with sea views and an outdoor pool.

OFF COURSE
It is imperative to hire a car and drive one of the wine routes – the non-drivers can stop off for tastings along the way! For surfing and diving the Baleal and Peniche beaches are best. If you fancy a slice of history then explore the narrow streets of the white washed town of Obidos.
