Hole by Hole Guide - 18th

carnoustie 18th

Thursday 5th July 2007

Name: Home
Par: 4
Championship Tee: 499 yards
Medal Tee: 444 yards

Colin Says: They've got to use their savvy here. The drive needs to be towards Miller's bunker but they'll probably opt to take a fairway-wood and stay short of it. Then they'll be left with an intimidating approach of 170-180 yards. This is an incredibly difficult and treacherous hole if a par is required to win.

Fergus Says: Nothing less than a good drive down the middle will do. Unless you've made good ground and have a clean lie it's not worth trying to attack the green in two as the burn waits just 15 yards short of the putting surface.

Paul Says: In the play-off I had 221 yards to the flag. I hadn't realised Leonard was in the burn. I thought his ball was in the bunker. If I'd known he was in the water I'd probably have laid up short and pitched on. On the commentary they were saying, “This isn't the right play.” But they didn't realise I thought Leonard was in sand rather than water.
