Royal and Ancient Captain announced

Hamish M J Ritchie has been nominated by Past Captains as Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews for 2008-2009. On Thursday 18 September He will assume the office of Captain at the traditional 'Driving In' ceremony, which will take place on the first tee of the Old Course. Ritchie has been a member of The R&A since 1974 and served as a member of the General Committee from 1993 through to 1998.

Hailing originally from Glasgow, he was educated at Oxford, where he held the captaincy at Oxford University Golf Club in 1964 and 1965. He has since been the Captain of the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society as well as holding the Captain position at his home club of Denham Golf Club. He was also the Chairman at Denham for four years, beginning in 2000.

Now, Ritchie is playing to a handicap of 11 and belongs to three clubs - Rye Golf Club, Chechessee Creek Club and the Duke's Golf Club. Retired from being an Insurance Broker, he is now living in Buckinghamshire.
