Weight Transfer on Pitch Shots

By Barney Puttick

Learn to transfer your weight for a crisper contact

To make a crisp contact and increase your control by creating backspin it is important to make a downward strike – trusting the loft of the club to get the ball airborne. Train yourself to drive your weight onto your left side through the downswing by hitting some practice shots with a towel beneath the sole of your right foot as shown below. This will encourage an effective weight shift that helps you find a sweet strike. Before hitting a pitch on the course for real, imagine that you are throwing an object towards the target. This instinctive action helps prepare your mind for the ideal weight shift onto your left side as you drive your hands through impact.
