The most destructive move you can make when hitting a fairway wood is to lunge towards the ball or the target at the start of the downswing. This creates a steep angle of attack that will reap havoc with the accuracy and quality of your ball striking. Hit a few practice shots concentrating on keeping your back to the target for a split second longer than usual as you start the downswing. If you can master the timing of this move your consistency is guaranteed to improve.
